Just as many of us judge books by their covers, so we often form instant opinions about the likely attributes and characteristics of products from their packaging. With only one chance to make a good impression, it's essential that your packaging says all the right things about your product if you are to ensure that it isn't rejected in favour of a similar alternative, or even overlooked entirely.

Good packaging isn't just about applying branding to the receptacle that delivers a product, it's about a myriad of other details, such as deciding what size and shape to use and considering the psychology behind these factors. Type and imagery are also paramount and have to be sensitive to the product and the target audience. If any of these attributes are poorly selected or executed, the entire design can be compromised.

Packaging is also about creating appeal and desire through design. An attractive package fosters temptation in the viewer, giving hints - some subtle, some blatant - about the characteristics of the product contained within. Positioning is a similarly significant function, with appropriate packaging instantly informing us whether a product is budget, mid-range or premium.
