Brief:

The ethos of “brewing beer in the traditional way, by craftsmen who worked to bring out original and satisfying flavours mixed with modern brewing techniques to add new twists and a fresh perspective” needed to be reflected in this brand.

Ahoy needed to create a brand for a brewery that stands out as a high quality brewery with unique character, dedicated to the art of brewing beer.

The target audience for this brand love and appreciate good beer - not beer for lager swillers, and definitely not beer for old farts. Additionally, the audience was predominantly male. There needed to be a fun and energetic feel to the brand, with a balance between high quality and lighthearted humour. It had to be bold, and stand out – it had to have balls. The first task was the naming.

Solution:

The name ‘Blue Ball’ was chosen for its simplicity, confidence and directness. The term ‘blue ball’ is also an in-joke with men, bringing a level of underlying light-hearted humour to the brand. The 50s pin-up girl branding emerged to give the Blue Ball a completely unique brand identity. By adopting this in conjunction with a retro-Americana theme to run through the branding, Blue Ball had created its own recognisable brand style. It stands out from its competitors, and the fun ideals give it an approachable appeal. Product identities and names were created for the three leading beers: Blonde Bombshell, Zepplin and Hawk. Beer pump designs and bottles were created that continued the brand style created.

Using Magento framework with bespoke build elements, we created an e-commerce website that was simple to use and direct. The retro – Americana style was used throughout the site, and the copy tone was lighthearted and approachable.

The branding and site have already become a resounding success.  It has been well received by its customers, reflected by superb sales figures and growing customer interest in its first month of going live.
