Google Chrome
Earlier on this year I wrote a blog on paper sculpting and the trend towards the handmade craft in design. Whilst mainstream cinema goes all 3D, and noughties products are all smooth, sleek and glossy (the iPhone for example), the trend towards ‘handmade’ advertising doesn’t seem to be waining.
Take a look at the adverts for Google Chrome; Googles' new internet browser. For something as digital as you can get, Google have chosen to go for a handcrafted style of advert. As an audience, it’s clear that we’re not as impressed as we once were by computer generated trickery in adverts. Maybe it’s due to the rise of You Tube over the past 10 years and the fact that if it’s clever and unique, it’s doesn’t matter about quality, true talent shines through.
There’s something warm and friendly about the handmade style that seems to hit the spot. You can see that much creative thought and effort has gone into making the ad which does nothing to hide any of it’s little imperfections. It can make huge, global brands appear almost small and innocent which is perfect for this age of mass consumerism.
So how much longer will the handmade trend last? When will we get bored? What could be round the corner for advertising in the next decade?
