The industry through the eyes of an undergrad

Ever wondered what the design industry looks like through the eyes of a soon to graduate student?
Nicola Foster from Stockport College gives us a monthly review of her fears and aspirations;

So this is it,  I am studying the final year of my graphic design degree. The past few months have been extremely busy and I’m quickly realising that great organisation is the key. Since starting back in September the work load has piled up quickly and I’m juggling 3 to 4 briefs at a time now.

I’ve studied design for 6 years now; beginning with a N.D. in 2003 and graduating from my HND in 2008.  From there I was pretty lucky to get offered a studio placement and gain some valuable industry experience.  Amazingly, this lasted for 16 months - great considering most companies agree to a couple of weeks or months at the most.  The experience I gained over the past 16 months was invaluable, and only helped to encourage me further to achieving my goal of a career in graphic design.

Being a student I’ve been quite nervous about approaching the industry. I often worry that companies will ignore you due to the amount of students contacting them.  However, the more agencies I began to contact I realised that most are actually more than happy to help.  During the month of November I took the opportunity to arrange 6 portfolio visits (some independently and some as a group of four) with agencies based in Manchester and Liverpool. Valuing their opinions and taking onboard their criticism, I hope to produce a portfolio of work that will help give me an edge over competitors.

The idea of stepping out of education and into the workplace is daunting.  Will I be good enough?  Do I have all the necessary skills? How much will I be expected to know? For now, all I can do is gain as much experience as possible, arrange more placements and complete my degree with the best result possible.
