Childhood Dreams

Childhood Dreams

The whole ahoy team took some time out at lunchtime to watch the latest episode of BBC 1’s High Street Dreams.

For those who may not have seen it it’s a great program in which two entrepreneurs Jo Malone and Nick Leslau help budding new companies get their products ready to pitch to one of their key markets players.

The episode was aimed at children’s products and featured an adventure outdoor ‘Den kit’ and a kid’s healthy drink called Nutriyum.

What was interesting was seeing the processes a business goes through with a new product and how important it was for any new products to be exposed to some market testing. The program showed the drink product needed to change the key ingredients, the bottle shape and even the overall product branding in order for it to appeal to the right target audience.

It has really helped educate juniors on our team to the importance of market research, consumer testing and the need for differentiation within a competitive market.

The Importance of Brand Guidelines

The Importance of Brand Guidelines

When establishing a brand it is important to develop brand guidelines - otherwise known as “The rule book” or "The Brand Bible".  The book of guides is used to educate, reinforce and motivate anyone involved in the building and maintenance of the brand. It’s vital in establishing and strengthening brand culture (or the brand’s “personality”).  Brand guidelines also help reinforce a high level of consistency throughout all forms of media.  Without them, your brand can look weak and messy, and not a brand at all.

Brand guidelines come in many different forms and focus on a number of elements involved in building a brand - such as vision, identity, strategy, values, writing and design style etc.

Brand guidelines don’t have to be boring - they can communicate the brands personality through the book itself.  A great example of this are the Skype brand guidelines - fun, friendly and informal from cover to cover. Have a flick through it here.
